App for Connecting Athletes with Coaches
We were hired by CoachUp (a TechStars startup) to give their full product a redesign, starting with user research, then a full round of wireframes and prototypes, and finally a fresh new UI for the CoachUp website and app. Over the course of our engagement, we also led the CoachUp tech team’s agile standups, dev postmortems, and facilitated frequent focus groups to test the usability of the flows we were designing.
The biggest challenge we faced was the constant churn of users abandoning the app (and avoiding payments) once they had met a coach they liked. As such, our goal was to design an app that was so consequential to the athlete-coach training experience that users wouldn't circumvent it, even if they could save a few bucks by doing so.
We gained a lot of insights from this project—about CoachUp, two-sided marketplaces, and startups. During our stint with CoachUp, we followed the team through two startup incubators: TechStars and MassChallenge. We learned how much effort it takes to build a nationwide startup from the ground up, and how pivotal a good user experience is in order to attract and retain users, especially throughout rapid design iterations.
Ultimately, we provided with CoachUp with a full redesign of their product that not only left it looking better than when we started, but that also achieved better rates on both user acquisition and retention.
